What to Wear for Your Couples Session: A Photographer’s Honest Guide

How to Look Like Yourselves—and Feel Damn Good Doing It

Let’s be real for a second…

Trying to figure out what to wear for your couples session can feel like this weird little pressure cooker.

You want to look amazing, but not too posed.
Coordinated, but not matchy-matchy.
Stylish, but still like yourself.

As a Florida-based couples and elopement photographer, I’m here to tell you- You don’t need to be Pinterest-perfect. You just need to feel like you!

And when you do? The photos will reflect that. Promise.

This is my honest, no-fluff guide to picking outfits for your couples session—whether you're planning an engagement shoot, anniversary session, or just want to document your love story on a random Tuesday.

Similar but not matching colors, and perfect for their location (a farm).

First: Choose the Vibe of Your Session

Before picking outfits, think about where your session is happening and what kind of mood you’re leaning into.

Are you…

  • Running barefoot through the woods? → go soft and flowy

  • Wandering downtown at sunset? → maybe a little bold and structured

  • Cuddling on the beach or in-home? → think cozy layers or linen

Need help with choosing your location? I always help my couples pick a spot that matches their energy. I have everything from local favorites in our backyard drivable trips up just waiting for us to explore.

Sundresses + beach are a winning combo

Cozy sweaters- even if it’s just for a quick photo because… Florida.

What to Wear for a Couples Session in Florida (By Season)

Spring / Summer

  • Breathable fabrics: linen, gauze, light cotton

  • Neutral, soft colors: oatmeal, sage, warm taupe, dusty rose

  • Flowy dresses, rompers, open button-downs, bare feet

  • Keep makeup + hair light and natural if it’s humid

Fall / Winter

  • Layer textures: corduroy, waffle knits, boots, denim

  • Rich earthy tones: rust, clay, forest green, mustard, charcoal

  • Sweater dresses, long skirts, wool hats, worn-in jackets

  • Think cozy, not heavy—you want to move and snuggle

The sunset, location, outfits, all create a perfect fall color scheme,

Summery, flirty clothes were the perfect fit for their beach session.

What Photographs Well (and What to Avoid)

YES to:

  • Earthy tones + neutrals

  • Texture over bold patterns

  • Layers + movement (especially with dresses or open shirts)

  • Simple accessories that feel like you

  • Well-loved boots, barefoot moments, and soft fabrics

Avoid:

  • Loud logos

  • Neon or bright-white clothing (can blow out in camera)

  • Overly busy patterns that clash on camera

  • Brand-new shoes you’ll regret walking in

Dresses with this sort of tulle-like skirt are stunning for water photos!

But... Do We Have to Match?

Nope. Please don’t, actually!

Instead of matching, aim to coordinate—stick to the same color palette or mood. Think:

  • One partner in beige, the other in soft sage

  • Denim + linen in complementary tones

  • Warm tones together (burnt orange + sand + tan)

If one of you is going bold, the other can go softer to balance it out.

Similar, but not the same colors! Khakis + button downs is always a great go-to for men’s outfits.

Bonus: Bring Two Outfits

If we have time (and you're down), a quick outfit change can bring variety and range to your gallery.

Ideas:

  • One casual, one a little fancy

  • One romantic, one artsy

  • One earthy, one downtown vibe

Not sure what to bring? Text me outfit options—I’ll help you narrow it down!

A more dressed up vibe.

More natural, casual look.

The best outfit?
The one that lets you move, laugh, kiss, spin, breathe, and be held.

Wear something that feels like home in your own skin. And let me take care of the rest.
